What on earth is Propylene Dimer g o o d for? What on earth is Propylene Dimer you ask? We're talking about 2-METHYL-lPENTENE. A listing of properties and possible applications follows: 1- The dimer can be converted to a mixture of C l2 olefins. The C l2 olefin mixture could be used in an alkylation process w i t h p h e n o l , cresols, or benzene. 2METHYL-1-PENTENE might be used in an oxo process to produce C,3 alcohols. 2. The propylene dimer will also react in an oxo process to give C7 alcohols. 3. In an alkylation reaction, it will convert phenol, cresols, and benzene to cor-

responding C6 alkylated derivatives. 4. The propylene dimer might produce liquid polymers useful for lubricating oil viscosity index improvers or for plasticizers. 5. Controlled o x i d a t i o n of the dimer should yield a C6 epoxide. 6. A Cb tertiary alcohol could be made from the dimer by hydration in the presence of an acid catalyst. 7. Dehydrogenation of the dimer would' give a mixture of methyl-pentadienes. These would all be conjugated dienes, reactive in polymerization.

8. 2-METHYL-l-PENTENE might also prove of value as a special solvent. 9- If interest develops, a 98 - f % pure stream of 2-METHYL-l-PENTENE can be made available. This material would be useful in the production of highly purified products. There are, undoubtedly, other application opportunities that will come to mind. We'd be pleased to discuss them with you.
