EQUIPMENT

Self-lubricating Ball Valve Has No Metal Parts b f u l l open round part design permits full flow without fur-

b

bulence Easily positioned in-line and easily repaired A new, inexpensive, rigid Koro-

seal poly (vinyl chloride), selflubricating ball valve is now available for use in industrial applications where valve corrosion is a serious problem. Lighter in weight and more compact than any other PVC valve, the ball valve provides easy take-up t o compensate for wear. Inexpensive replacement parts are simple to install. The ball floats in the valve chamber. Teflon seats will not stick nor gall, ensuring easy operation. Union nuts a t each end of the valve provide easy positioning and repair. Valves are available in either threaded or socket ends for installation with solvent cement. Having no metal parts, the quickopening valve will not rust or corrode. I t s chemical resistance is equal to high impact rigid Koroseal grade 300. Recommended working pressures for sizes 0.5 through 1.5 inches: 140 p.s.i. a t 100" F., 70 p.s.i. a t 130" F. Twoand 3-inch sizes are recommended to 100 p.s.i. a t 100" F., 50 p.s.i. a t 1 12 A

TANTALUM HEAT EXCHANGER SOLVES HIGH TEMPERATURE "03 PROBLEM Commercial Solvent's plant at Sterlington, La., produces flake ammonium nitrate by neutralizing nitric acid with anhydrous ammonia. The reaction takes place at 400-460°F., driving off water introduced with the acid. A key piece of equipment in this operation is a Fansteel tantalum heat exchanger which has been giving outstanding service with no visible corrosion noted over a number of years. Handles "03 at 45 Gal/Min This Fansteel equipment handles up to 45 gal/min at elevated temperatures with a heat transfer coefficient greater than 550 Btu/hr/sq ft/"F. I t is made of three 8-ft. sections in series. If one unit must be removed the other two may be coupled and run at reduced flow. Each unit consists of a bundle of 19 straight tantalum tubes, E'' O.D. and with a 0.015" wall. This gives 20 square feet of heat transfer surface for each section.

PURE LATEX TUBING

This photo, taken during extracorporal heart surgery, shows the use of a Sigmamotor Pump, It utilizes a peristaltic-like action for handling liquids, slurries or gases. It was chosen for this delicate operation because it cannot contaminate blood. In contact only with pure RLP Latex Tubing, the blood never touches working parts of the pump. RLP Latex Tubing is used as the conductor in these pumps because of its purity and resiliency. Only RLP can recover fast enough from the pulsating action to provide safe and efficient operation. These qualities, along with its strength, lightness, gripping power, flexibility and chemical resistance, give RLP Latex Tubing countless laboratory and product i o n applications. Economical too - it can be repeatedly sterilized and re-used. o Available in 24 Photo cor~r~esy of The University of MinneJoIu

Radioactivity Gage Measures Fluid Density

Dual-Switch Temperature Control

New gage measures fluid density, specific gravity, or per cent solids in a liquid continuously and automatically with a full scale range as narrow as 0.05 specific gravity unit. Accuracy is reported t o be 2 2 % . The gage uses a radioactive source and a detecting cell which converts radioactive energy directly into electrical energy proportional to fluid density. Gage output signals can actuate valves, pumps, and heaters in a closed-loop system for controlling the density variable in flow processing. Dept. I E C , Ohmart Corp., $936 Bogen St., Cincinnati 14, Ohio. 74

New control is a sensitive, remote bulb temperature control designed for use in hazardous locations where explosive vapors and gases are present. Two separate switches permit switch action above or below the set point, control of two independent circuits, and great flexibility of switching arrangement. Dept. IEC, United Electric Controls Co., 79 School St., Watertown 72, M a s s . 78

FOR

PRODUCTION

OF

Clearwater In the design and manufacture of watertreating equipment, it often becomes necessary to include a filter of some type in the line-up in order to insure clarity and cleanliness of the water going to the next step. The picture above shows a large filter installation (in this case, at an outdoor location), one of many we have planned and produced to meet particular conditions or situations. DIFFERENT TYPES MANY APPLICATIONS

The filters we make may be any of the various types usually associated with the cleaning of water. Possible applications are numerous and may include such functions as removal of iron, rust, and manganese, removal of turbidity and suspended solids, clarification of limesoftened water, removal of free chlorine, organic matter, tastes, and odors, and various other special filtering requirements. Whatever filters are needed in a water-treatment system, we are prepared to produce them.

. . . The Lime Glass Man

The executives at Doerr Glass Company call economy a double-edged sword for cuttin' costs. They say that true economy i s made up of two factors , lowest possible price and best possible performance. When you think about it a while, this makes a lot of sense. Y' know, some people insist that if you pay top price, you get top quality. That isn't necessarily true! Neither i s it true that if you pay the lowest possible price you get lowest quality. In between, you can usually find the best value , the item that gives you the best possible quality at the lowest possible price. An' that's true economy, , Look at heat-resistant, borosilicate laboratory glassware, for instance. Some items made of this kind of glass actually cost as high as 100% more than the same item in the Diamond D Blue Line. If you have to have heat-resistant ware, then you'll have to pay those kind of prices. But if you aren't going to use the item over an open flame, for heaven's sake, think, man! When you begin paying 100% more , you're wastin' a lot of money. Remember , , , economy's a double-edged sword. Make sure you use both edges!

Fication and solids concentra- tion, with concentrate recycle.

Are you still using old-fashioned and time-consuming “stop and go“ batch methods-such as filtering or settling-in the solids concentration phase of your process? If SO, the WESTFALIA line of Continuous Centrifugal Concentrators (with capacities up to 30,000 gph) may be your answer. There are many WESTFALIA concentrator types to do a variety of jobs-concentrating valuable solids, clarifying a valuable liquid, or separating a mixture of two immiscible liquids with simultaneous solids removal Each type has special features to do a specific job. The SKG, for instance, because of its design, permits recycling of the concentrate directly to the nozzle area without mixing with the feed material, thus permitting higher throughput capacities.

WESTFALIA CONCENTRATORS ARE SUCCESSFULLY HANDLING , Concentration of food and feed yeast, starches and gluten, vitamin slurries, glucose and lactose, bacteria media, fermenter products, barium sulfate, aluminum hydroxide De-oiling and Clarification of fish presswater, wool scouring liquor, citrus peel liquids..
