For Your Information Mattson Instruments Inc. has estab lished an institute for spectroscopic research in Columbus, Ohio. This re search center will advance and pro mote spectroscopic research, dissemi nate spectroscopic information to the scientific community, provide spec troscopic training, and be a focal point for scientific committee activities. Heading the institute's staff will be Robert Jakobsen, formerly associate director of the National Center for Biomedical Infrared Spectroscopy at Battelle Memorial Institute's Colum bus Division. Further information can be obtained from Mattson Instru ments Inc., 6333 Odana Rd., Madison, Wis. 53719. Vega Biotechnologies, Inc., has en tered into a distribution and joint re search agreement with E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. Under the agreement, Du Pont will be the ex clusive distributor and provide field service for Vega's line of DNA and • peptide synthesizer instruments and chemicals and provide up to $1.8 mil lion to fund a joint research project to develop products for the growing bio technology research market. The agreement also gives Du Pont a threeyear option to purchase from Vega sufficient shares to give Du Pont up to 20% of Vega's outstanding common stock. Contact Vega Biotechnologies, Inc., P.O. Box 11648, Tucson, Ariz. 85734 for further details. National Bureau of Standards (NBS) researchers are joining forces with the U.S. Food and Drug Ad ministration and Department of Agriculture to assist the Internation al Atomic Energy Commission in a study of the levels of 24 biologically important trace elements in a world wide cross section of diets. Foods in 11 countries, including the United States, will be examined. NBS is responsible for developing methods for analyzing the food samples, with emphasis on ensuring the quality of data collection. The U.S. Department of Commerce, NBS, Gaithersburg, Md. 20899 can provide additional information.
