KEY RESEARCH IN KEY CHEMI Acyniconcedescribed researches "theaccumulation of data to justify a predetermined course of action." He didn't work at Wyandotte. For, in the chemical industry, research is the wellspring from which most products have sprung. And it has been the source of our growth and diversification. For example, 21 years ago, we didn't make a single surfactant; today we make more than 100 different grades. Every one of them born of Wyandotte research. But, at Wyandotte, research doesn't stop when the product is developed. And it has led us into some interesting areas of application. Would you believe marine salvage operators are raising sunken ships with urethane foam that utilizes polyols developed by Wyandotte technology? Or that certain specialized surfactantsarehelpingtoincreaseyields in secondary oil recovery by as much as $30 worth of extra petroleum for each dollar invested in the surfactant? All because of our way of going at research. Our way? We don't develop a product, then simply use this research as a tool to justify its use in a

customer's product. Rather, we concentrate on the complete capabilities of the product. In depth. In obscure applications as well as obvious ones. You might call what we do, "key research in key chemicals." Because of it, we know a great deal about our products and their capabilities long before they are commercially available. That's why Wyandotte can usually answer customers' questions almost as fast as they are uttered. You won't get a lot of hemming and hawing when you ask us if we make a product that will fulfill a specific function. We already know. And we've got tons of technical background to fill you in on the details. In other words, our research complements our customers' research. We believe in not telling others what should be done . . . but in doing a practical job of finding out the capabilities of our products. We think this makes sense. Sense to you. Sense to us. And sense in the long run makes better end products and sensible prices. Want to put your research in touch with ours? Use our key . . . and see!

WYANDOTTE RESEARCH MAY ALREADY HAVE ANSWERS FOR YOUR QUESTIONS When you choose a Wyandotte chemical for your product or process, chancesareyou'reinforapleasantsurprise. Because of our insistence on in-depth research, you may find we've already done a good bit of the spadework you'd normally, expect to do yourself. Wyandotte's concern in research does not stop with the chemistry of the product. We also look deeply into its application, capabilities and economics. We examine it with the eyes of an engineer, a marketing man and a bookkeeper, as well as with those of a chemist. Result? An unusually rich store of practical research data. All yours for the asking!

What makes Wyandotte research so interesting? To those who cast their lot with us, it is the unbounded capacity of our people to devise new molecules and meet an industry's need . . . or their capability to find practical uses for existing products. We are not confined to a single product line or industry. Wyandotte research is chemical research in the broadest sense. It covers many industries, including automotive, soap and detergents, cosmetics, food, drugs, paint, paper and plastics (including urethanes), to name a few.

Cooperation with the detergent industry is a good example of how Wyandotte conducts in-depth research. This semicontinuous Activated Sludge Test simulates a commercial sewage treatment facility. It is but one of several ways Wyandotte evaluates the biodegradability of surfactants. We investigate not only efficacy of product, but other pertinent areas, such as side effects, storability, shipment methodology, use techniques and, in some cases, byproduct disposal.

Chemical Engineering . . . where the investigation of products and processes helps assure faster, more effective transition from research to commercial reality. Here, too, through the interchange of small-scale processing units, new ideas for quality improvement and greater efficiency in the production and application of our products are tried. Our successes here have made important contributions to our customers' profits. Y
