Robert J. Cotter received his BS from Holy Cross College and his PhD in physical chemistry from The Johns Hopkins University. In 1978, he joined the faculty of the Johns Hop kins School of Medicine, where he is also the facility manager for the Mid dle Atlantic Mass Spectrometry Lab oratory, an NSF shared instrumenta tion facility. His research has focused on the development of the new ion ization methods: thermal desorption of organic ions, laser desorption, and particle bombardment techniques, which are aimed at extending the range of compounds appropriate for mass spectrometry. He is likewise in terested in the mechanisms of ion for mation, as elucidated by time-re solved laser studies, and in the poten tial of TOF instruments for high mass analysis.
