Creating a workhorse cleaner is no achievement if the product corrodes metals. Buffered alkalinity makes PQ® sodium silicates effective in neutralizing acidic soil and emulsifying greases and oils. Unlike other alkalies, however, sodium silicates inhibit corrosion in tin, aluminum, copper, brass, and soft metal alloys and protect china glazes. That's because of their dissolved silica content, a proven corrosion inhibitor. Used in medium- and heavy-duty cleaners or in household detergents, sodium silicates combine detergent cleaning action with protection against corrosion. The detergent properties permit products such as

METSO® silicate alkalies to be used in such diverse applications as waste paper de-inking, ore flotation, bleach stabilization, and clay processing. PQ sodium silicates are also widely used in municipal water distribution systems. There they form a thin film on the inner surface of water mains and pipes to protect them from corrosion and to stabilize dissolved iron and manganese. But preventing corrosion is not the only way PQ chemicals inhibit. Our NYACOL® antimony pentoxide dispersion, for example, is a flame retardant that is added to keep plastics and synthetic textile fibers from burning.
