Attracting, retaining, and developing women into positions of leadership within the field of medicinal chemistry is an imperative in order to address the consequences of gender inequality and the “leaky pipeline” effect. Recently, some of us articulated components of the barriers to career progression that women medicinal chemists face in a Viewpoint published in ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters.1 The Viewpoint noted that a low percentage of women (about 20%) are members of professional organizations, corresponding authors of medicinal chemistry journal articles and hold professional and leadership positions in the field of medicinal chemistry. However, we are encouraged that steps forward are being made and that solutions to the problem are within our reach. Acknowledging that we can be part of the solution to accelerate the path forward to gender parity, as joint editors, we are committed to launching a special issue dedicated to women in medicinal chemistry. This special issue intends to be a tribute to all women who, united by their sense of belonging to the community, are motivated to leave their impact and to contribute to develop both themselves and the science around them. More importantly, this issue should be a beacon for new female generations initiating a career in medicinal chemistry. Our wish is that they feel welcome, supported, and confident in aspiring to leadership roles in our discipline. To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls2 is the no. 5 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 5). We hope that this issue will be a tangible step toward this goal, empowering all women from the global medicinal chemistry community. In order to be eligible for the special issue, manuscripts must have a first or corresponding author who is female. For the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, authors are encouraged to submit Articles, Brief Articles, and Drug Annotations at https://pubs.acs.org/publish. If you are interested in submitting a Perspectives manuscript, please contact Nicholas Meanwell at [email protected]. © XXXX American Chemical Society
