PROPERTIES
PHYSICAL AND CHEftifiCAL PROPERTIES
Solutions of sodium xylenesulfonate have t h e p r o p erty of "salting i n " or increasing the solubility of many slightly soluble chemicals in aqueous systems. This unique p r o p e r t y makes sodium xylenesulfonate attractive f o r numerous processes e m p l o y e d in the chemical industry. It is suggested f o r solvent extraction, speeding u p chemical reactions, l o w e r i n g of the reaction temperatures r e q u i r e d for certain reactions, as a mutual solvent for increasing the solubility of organic compounds in aqueous systems, s p e e d i n g up two-phase (liquid-liquid) o r g a n i c reactions, f o r purifying organics, as a solvent f o r lignin a n d pentosans, and f o r increasing t h e w a t e r solubility o f m a n y sparingly soluble inorganic salts.
W y a n d o t t e sodium xylenesulfonate is a v a i l a b l e as a n a q u e o u s solution in which the a p p r o x i m a t e l y 4 0 % solids a r e primarily t h e sodium sulfonate derivatives o f t h e 1,3-isomer w i t h small amounts of the derivatives of the 1,2-isomer. The solution is straw c o l o r e d , slightly a l k a l i n e (pH a t 25°C,—7.5 t o 8.5), has a f a i n t sweet o d o r a n d contains less than 2 % inorganic salts. Solutions o f sodium xylenesulfonate exhibit moderate w e t t i n g properties.
