NEWS Evan C. Horning The JOURNAL regrets to report the death of Evan C. Horning, analytical chemist and pioneer in GC and GC/MS analysis of biologically important compounds, on May 14. In 1990 Horning shared the ACS Frank H. Field and Joe L. Franklin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mass Spectrometry with his wife, biochemist Marjorie G. Horning.
Yeung Receives Technology Transfer Award Edward S. Yeung, Associate Editor for spectroscopy for ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY, was given one of the Federal Laboratory Consortium's (FLC) awards for Excellence in Technology Transfer. Yeung was recognized for his work in transferring a laser-based method for indirect fluorescence of limited-size biological samples using the Microfluor Detector. The FLC annually gives a maximum of 30 awards to acknowledge efforts by government agencies and their contractors to transfer products and processes to private industry for commercialization.
Nominations Requested for Waterman Award The National Science Foundation's Alan T. Waterman Award is presented annually to an outstanding young scientist, mathematician, or engineer. The award consists of a grant of up to $500,000 over a three-year period for research in the mathematical, computer, physical, biological, social, engineering, and other sciences. A medal is also awarded. Nominees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and 35 years of age or younger or not more than five years beyond receipt of their Ph.D. by Dec. 31. For information, contact Susan Fannoney, National Science Foundation, 1800 G St., N.W., Washington, DC 20550 (202-357-7512). Deadline for receipt of nominations is Dec. 31.
to provide copies of the JOURNAL to undergraduate students enrolled in instrumental analysis courses in the United States. This year 1063 subscriptions will go to 293 professors at academic institutions participating in the Enhancement Program for Students in Instrumental Analysis Courses. Issues of the JOURNAL (Sept. 1 through Dec. 15) are provided to enrich course content and to encourage students to continue studying analytical chemistry at the graduate level. Professors participating in the program ensure that the issues are available to students in the laboratory; some of them also assign student projects based on material in ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY. A guide describing the use of the publication as a supplementary teaching tool is also provided. The JOURNAL and the Division of Analytical Chemistry, through its Undergraduate Awards in Analytical Chemistry, will provide approximately 400 undergraduate students with eight-month subscriptions (Oct. 1 through May 15). Awardees are selected annually by chemistry faculty at U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities. The awards are designed to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement and to stimulate interest in analytical chemistry. Students will also receive the Division newsletter.
Nominations for 1995 Wiley Award The $3500 Harvey W. Wiley Award is given to an outstanding scientist or research team for contributions to analytical methodology in areas of interest to AOAC International. A proposal has been presented to Congress to establish the National Institute for the Environment (NIE) as part of the newly proposed Department of the Environment. The NIE intends to sponsor credible, problemfocused research in environmental resources, systems, and sustainability; provide comprehensive assessments of current knowledge through the Center for Environmental Assessment; expand access to information by establishing the National Library for the Environment; and improve higher education through the Directorate of Education and Training. For further information, contact the Committee for the NIE, 730 11th St., N.W., Washington, DC 20001-4521 (202-628-4303; fax 202628-4311).
As the 1993-94 academic year begins, undergraduate students will receive ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY through two programs cosponsored by the JOURNAL that are designed to enhance their academic experience in the discipline. For the eleventh year, the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) will help fund a program
In 1992 AOAC International adopted 33 peer-reviewed analytical methods. The methods will be published in the fourth supplement to the 15th Edition of Official Methods of Analysis of the AOAC.
