"Zone Refining And Allied Techniques" T h e s t u d y of m a t t e r in a high s t a t e of p u r i t y h a s b e c o m e , in recent years, a subject of vital interest to r e s e a r c h workers. T h e r a p i d a d v a n c e s in t h e use a n d application of s e m i c o n d u c t o r s a n d o t h e r materials h a v e resulted in a d e m a n d for materials in so p u r e a state t h a t in m a n y cases t h e desirable limits of i m p u r i t y c o n t e n t a r e well b e low p r e s e n t limits of detection b y k n o w n m e t h o d s . In view of t h e w i d e interest in purity, N . L . Parr h a s set out to p r o v i d e a c o m p r e h e n s i v e review of a powerful m e t h o d of material purification in his book "Zone Refining a n d Allied T e c h n i q u e s . " Parr's a i m is to p r e s e n t t h e subject from a practical, r a t h e r than a t h e o retical point of view, in order to h e l p those w h o r e q u i r e a relatively simple m e a n s for o b t a i n i n g substances in a high state of p u r i t y . An a t t e m p t h a s b e e n m a d e to cater to all types of e q u i p m e n t n e e d s , from inexpensive e q u i p m e n t w h i c h can b e c o n s t r u c t e d easily from laboratory c o m p o n e n t s , t o carefully d e s i g n e d a n d especially constructed a d v a n c e d e q u i p m e n t . T h e a u t h o r presents a qualitative a n d sometimes naive theoretical discussion of certain aspects of t h e freezing process w h i c h h a v e a b e a r i n g on t h e zone r e fining process. H e then goes on to describe t h e practical factors t h a t m u s t b e considered in t h e design, construction, a n d operation of various forms of z o n e refining e q u i p m e n t . A qualitative discussion of material containm e n t , forms of heat a n d t e m p e r a t u r e control, v a c u u m technology, a n d gas purification follows. Finally, h e qualitatively describes some m e t h o d s of estimating t h e impurity content a n d some p r o p e r t i e s a n d uses of zone r e fined materials. This q u a l i t a t i v e book a d d s little to t h e existing literature on t h e subject. Specialists will find few items of v a l u e b u t n e w c o m e r s to t h e field m a y gain some e q u i p m e n t tips.
