A Convenient Method to Prepare Ammonia and Hydrogen Chloride Gases We present here a simple and convenient procedure for preparing ammonia and hydrogen chloride gases. The main advantages of thin procedure are that it is quick and requires no heating. In addition, the reagent* and materials required should heavailahle in moat schoolsand colleges and provide aneconomiral alternative when cummercinl cylmders of chpae gases are unavailable. When commercial cylinders are not available, ammonia is usually generated by heating ammonium chloride with a base, such as calcium hydroxide, while hydrogen chloride may be made by heating a mixture of sodium chloride and sulfuric acid. To prepare the ammonia gas, place 50 mL of concentrated ammonium hydroxide solution in a 250-mL Erlenmeyer r . with a piece of elass tubine. flask. To this is added 12 e of sodium hvdroxide oellets. and a one-holed rubber s t o ~ ~ efitted is olaced on the flask. A n k o n i s evolu
