CARBON MONOXIDE A Versatile Chemical For Your Exploration Because of its reducing power and i t s versatility in catalytic addition reactions Carbon Monoxide is a valuable chemical in many experimental reactions. Extensive explorations [confer Chemical Abstracts Indices 52, 576-9 ( 1 9 5 8 ) ] are still proceeding in the utilization of Carbon Monoxide in the chemical industry. bon Monoxide to give acrylic acid and derivatives. 11. Aliphatic ethers react with Carbon Monoxide or Carbon Monoxide and water to give esters or acids. 12. Formals react with Carbon Monoxide in the presence of boron trifluoride or strong acids to give alkoxy substituted esters.
The Matheson Company supplies two grades of Carbon Monoxide for your use in various applications: a C.P. Grade of 99.5% minimum purity and a Commercial Grade of 98.0% minimum p u r i t y . Various cylinder sizes a r e available. Carbon Monoxide (BP-327.5°F) is a toxic, flammable, colorless, and odorless gas. I t is shipped as a nonliquefied gas in high pressure steel cylinders a t a maximum pressure of 1000 p.s.i.g. at 70°F. according to I.C.C. regulations. The extensive use of Carbon Monoxide in various chemical applications is illustrated by the following reactions: No. 8 Regulator
1. At t e m p e r a t u r e s of 300-1500°C., Carbon Monoxide reduces m a n y 7. metal oxides (like those of cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, silver, and tin) to lower oxides, metals, and metal carbides. For reductions where water is 8. detrimental as a by-product, Carbon Monoxide reduction is ideal. 2. The alkali and alkaline earth metals and some of the heavy metals combine with Carbon Monoxide, the former giving salts and the latter carbonyls. 9. 3. Carbon Monoxide reacts with chlorine and bromine under the influence of light or a charcoal catalyst to give phosgene and carbonyl bromide, respectively. 10. 4. Carbon Monoxide reacts slowly with liquid sulfur and rapidly with the vapor to give carbonyl sulfide. 5. Carbon Monoxide reacts with Grignard reagents giving a variety of products; e.g. acyloins and alpha diketones from the Grignard reagents of tertiary halides, 2-butene from ethylmagnesium halide. 6. Hydrogenation of Carbon Monoxide gives a variety of products, depending on the catalyst and conditions used: methane, benzene, paraffins, olefins, paraffin waxes, hydrocarbon high polymers, methanol, higher alcohols, ethylene glycol, and other oxygenated products being obtained.
