Preface Agrochemical Discovery: Insect, Weed, and Fungal Control provides a unique current look at the process of discovery in the field of crop protection. Crop protection is undergoing a major restructuring in the methods used for insect, weed, and fungal control. The major advances in medical genetic engineering are finding applications in modifying plants to better be able to provide their own crop protection or enhanced yield and quality. Crops of many types are coming that have resistance to specific highly potent herbicides. Similarly, crop plants are being developed that can control their specific insect or fungal problems. Because of the development of resistance by many types of plants to various control agents, it is necessary to look for entirely new active types of compounds. Combinatorial chemistry approaches long used in medical discovery are now being applied to find new agrochemical types. In this way hundreds of thousands of new compounds can be made and tested for the proper characteristics for safe and economic use in agriculture. Additionally, natural products are finding increased use in the development of new means and types of crop control agents. The 2 Pan-Pacific Conference on Pesticide Science held in October 1999 in Honolulu, Hawaii brought together an international focus on these new developments in crop protection. The ideas presented there provide the foundation for the material covered in this new book. nd
