sensitizers, >60 kcal/mol, excite s-cis and s-trans diene conformers indiscriminately producing mainly s-trans triplets which give cyclobutane products. Lower energy sensitizers, 60 > ET > 50 kcal/mol, favor excitation of s-cis conformations, yielding s-cis triplets which give chiefly cyclohexene products. The requirement is that s-cis and s-trans triplets d o not interconvert. Although photostationary trans-cis ratios for the sensitized isomerization of the 1,3-pentadienes vary over the same triplet energy region, Figure I, the role of s-cis triplets in cis-trans isomerization has not been evaluated. 3 , 4 1,3-Pentadienes. A mechanism for sensitized 1,3pentadiene cis-trans photoisomerization including the intermediacy of s-cis triplets is given by eq 1-8 (3p

For high-energy sensitizers, k3 = k4 = ks = k6 = kdir and since K and K’ are small, terms containing a’ are negligible. For fluorenone, q L t / a = 0.55 = a, indicating that s-cis triplets are not produced from cis-1,3-pentadiene, i.e., K‘
