The next three chapters are perhaps less complete in their coverage than the preceding tour. Chapter 6 is on ionization and excitation in hydrocarbon flames. This area is characterized by a n almost complete lack of quantitative d a t a on rate constants, or even mechanisms. Chapter 7 is a brief b u t useful r6sumd of some of the facts of soot formation. Chapter 8 considers flame inhibitions, especially that brought about by halogens. Chapter 9 examines the value of the deduction of rate data from burning velocity measurements. This, of course, is how most flame chemistry was done prior t o abouf 10 years ago. In this connection, various flames, mostly decomposition, are discussed. The author’s main conclusion is one long suspected, that the simple measurement of the burning velocity is not very illuminating. At the end of this chapter is a section which might better have been included in Chapter 4, a discussion of the possible importance of HOl in hydrogen flames. The last chapter gives special consideration t o the reactions of NO in S H I , hydrocarbon, and methyl nitrite decomposition flames. The book is well referenced, but has a rather short index. The main criticism is the lack of a clear prefatory statement of the scope and completeness of the work. Thus, the index gives 18 citations t o elementary flame reactions but the literature contains many more. The point is that the author apparently includes only those for which he feels there is real evidence. Qualitative analysis is simplified by the use of Kovats’ retention indices for many organic compounds as well a s some inorganic compounds and complexes. T h e obvious limitation t o such tables is t h a t data are not available for all important liquid phases and solutes. However this compendium is a good start and hopefully will stimulate the use and further expansion of such information. I t is certainly t o be wished t h a t Kaiser will maintain his position as editor and compiler. In addition to retention indices, there are tables of liquid phases and adsorbents with temperature limits, names and addresses of suppliers, mesh size conversions, English t o metric conversions, German-English glossary of G C terms, etc. Particularly well done is the explanation of the relative molar response values of Messner, et al., and their use. Examples of calculations are highly commended for their clarity. Kaiser and Scott have performed a real service in making available a handbook of reasonably current data a n d ideas. I t is recommended t o all laboratories where G C is an important tool for analysis.

The authors tend t o discuss a system by presenting a few yields which have been observed and then giving a lengthy mechanism (typically five t o ten steps) which might fit the data. The student is left with no clue as t o which mechanisms have more t o back them u p than just the measurement of a few products. The text also suffers from a lack of critical judgment in places. For instance the chain reaction between ortho- and parahydrogen is discussed in terms of the Eyring, Hirschfelder, and Taylor free-radical mechanism while the hydrogen-deuterium chain is discussed separately in terms of an ionic chain reaction. In the discussion of the oxygen-nitrogen system, eleven reactions are given as t h e “dominant” reactions of the mechanism. Six of these reactions produce oxygen atoms yet none of the listed dominant reactions consumes oxygen atoms. Thirteen problems are given in an Appendix along with methods for solving them and the answers. The problems are quite useful and are all concerned with the physics of radiation and with dosimetry. This book can be useful in a n undergraduate or beginning graduate course in radiation chemistry although it places almost all of the burden of showing the pathway between data and mechanisni on the instructor. The book is not recommended a s text for individual study.
