ANALYTICAL CURRENTS Imaging combinatorial libraries When it comes to identifying compounds generated by combinatorial chemistry, IR-based methods are often at the top of the list because of their low cost, ease of use, and ability to collect data rapidly. Many IR-based methods, however, are capable of analyzing only one sample at a time. To overcome this limitation, Jochen Lauterbach and co-workers at Purdue University have turned to FT-IR imaging in the mid-IR. They report on what may be the first truly parallel screening and structural characterization method capable of simultaneously analyzing multiple resin-supported combinatorial library members. What makes it all possible is a focal plane array detector and an IR spectrometer. When coupled together, they create a system that rapidly provides both spatial and spectral information. In
