Award-Winning Organometallic Chemistry: The 2011 RSC Organometallic Chemistry Award (and More) n this issue, the spotlight turns for the first time to a prize sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the year 2011 Organometallic Chemistry Award.1,2 This is a young award, established in 2009; it is conferred biennially and is open to all organometallic chemists without restrictions. It can be anticipated that many of the recipients will be drawn from our authors in the coming years. The year 2011 awardee, and the second recipient of the prize, is Professor Ilan Marek, who holds the Sir Michael and Lady Sobell Academic Chair at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. His laudatio reads “For development of organometallic methods for organic chemistry allowing an enantioselective synthesis of quaternary aldol products, and the stereoselective synthesis of important organic molecules using Ti- or Zr-reagents or main-group organometallics”. A brief biography of Prof. Marek can be found in the award article that follows. The award was conferred at the RSC Organic Chemistry Midlands Section Meeting on April 13, 2012, in Warwick, U.K. It consists of a medal and a certificate, both of which can be seen in Figure 1, as well as a more securely placed £2000. Ilan, we congratulate you for your numerous accomplishments that served as the basis for these awards, only a small fraction of which are highlighted in your article. Your clever and original applications of organometallic chemistry in organic synthesis have inspired many and seen wide use. We look forward to your continued scientific leadership and many stimulating future contributions from your laboratory.

marks the third award to an Israeli organometallic chemist that we have profiled in the last two years,3,4 an indication that our field is both nurtured and appreciated by the scientific policy makers in Israel. Indeed, 4 days prior to the due date for this Editor’s Page, the Israel Chemical Society (ICS) announced that Prof. Marek would be one of two recipients of the year 2012 ICS Prize of Excellence.5 The award ceremony will take place at the upcoming ICS annual meeting (February 12−13, 2013). © 2013 American Chemical Society
