MICROSCOPE.

The MUF-4

ultraviolet microscope uses two types of mercury lamps or a xenon lamp as a radiation source. It is equipped with two monochromators with special dif fraction gratings, a three frame photo graphic camera, and a special cnromoscope for investigations by the color transformation technique. It is used to photograph specimens in transmitted ultraviolet and visible light. The spectral region is 250 to 700 ιτ\μ and the spectral band width is about 10 mji. It is possible to make color photos with ultraviolet light with the help of the Brumberg technique of color transfor mation. The instrument permits ob servation of the specimen image in the ultraviolet region with the help of a fluorescent screen. In this case the spectral region is 250 to 365 ΓΠμ with a spectral band width of about 10 νημ. Visible and UV fluorescence of speci mens may be photographed with the help of the color transformation tech nique. Here the region of fluorescence excitation is 250 to 450 m^ and the spectral band width isaboutlO rtn. Rapid changes from observations on a fluorescent screen to measurements of absorption curves is possible. Magnifications when photographing in the UV are 30 to 700X; when observing on a fluorescent screen, 80 to 1260X; and when observing in visible light, 80 to 1800X.

Heart of B&L Monochromator is a Cer tified Precision Grating, ultimate in light dispersion.

of any wavelength from ultra-violet to infra-red It's as easy as tuning your radio! Just turn the micrometer drum to set the grating to the wavelength you want. You get full spectral coverage (2000A to 14,000A), plus your choice of interchangeable gratings for maximum intensity in specific wavelength regions. The

UVT-l microscope is used to study metal structures under strain at high tempera tures in a high vacuum system (10^5 mm. Hg). Maximum temperature of a sample is 1400° C. and magnification is 500 X. Dark field, light field, and slanting light are used. Using this device one can get the diagram (picture) "lengthening time" by heating at the same time. Temperature of the sample is automati cally recorded at the diagram. The in strument is supplied with photo and movie cameras. Another microscope exhibited at the exposition was the ML-1 luminescence
