16 Decarbonylation of Aldehydes Using Ruthenium(II) Porphyrin Catalysts G. DOMAZETIS, B. R. JAMES, B. TARPEY, and D. DOLPHIN

During studies on ruthenium(II) porphyrins containing tertiary phosphine ligands (1), we discovered several complexes that readily abstracted carbon monoxide from oxygen-containing organics, particularly aldehydes. A stoichiometric decarbony lation of coordinated NN-dimethylformamide (dmf) within a Ru(TPP)(dmf) complex (TPP = dianion of tetraphenylporphyrin) had been observed previously, and this could be made catalytic after photolytic removal of CO from the resulting Ru(TPP)(CO)L complex, L being dmf, or possibly NHMe the decarbonylation product (2). Stoichiometric decarbonylation of aldehydes and acid chlorides can be achieved readily using platinum metal com plexes (3), but difficulties are encountered in displacing the coordinated CO either thermally (3) or photolytically (4), and few cases of catalytic decarbonylation have been reported (5). We recently reported briefly on an extremely efficient thermal catalytic decarbonylation of aldehydes using a system based on Ru(TPP)(PPh )2 (6), and report here further studies on this system and one based on Ru(TPP)(CO)( Bu P0H). 2

Experimental Materials. The commercially available aldehydes were dis tilled prior to use and stored at 0°C under argon. The cyclohexene- and cyclopentene- aldehydes, and the indane aldehyde (see Table) were gifts from Professor E. Piers of this depart ment. Some evidence f o r the presence of Ru(III) species a l s o comes from c y c l i c voltammetry ( F i g . 2). In the presence of the indane aldehyde, a d d i t i o n a l somewhat i r r e v e r s i b l e waves are seen at c_ (^0.1 V ) , which probably r e f e r to some Ru(III) intermediates (10) i n v o l v e d i n the c a t a l y s i s . In the corresponding phenylacetaldehyde system, a d d i t i o n a l waves are seen at about -0.08 and +0.08 V. On adding BuQP to the indane aldehyde system, waves are seen at 0.30 V [RuIII(TPP)( Bu3P)2 + e R U ( T P P ) ( B u P ) 2 ] , and ^0.90 V [due to the couple shown i n eq. 1, with PPI13 l i k e l y replaced by B u 3 P ] , with an e x t r a wave being observed at +0.1 V. I n f r a r e d measurements i n the ν(CO) region during the decar b o n y l a t i o n of the indane aldehyde using the Ru(TPP)(PPh )2 c a t a l y s t system revealed a small peak at 2015 cm , as w e l l as expected bands i n the 1950-1970 cm" r e g i o n , c h a r a c t e r i s t i c of the Ru(TPP)(C0)L (L = PPh , Bu3P) complexes (1). The peak could be that of a jtrans-dicarbonyl [ c f . the 2005 cnT band of Ru(TPP)(CO) , (11)]; these species c o n t a i n an extremely l a b i l e CO, which would be germane to our c a t a l y t i c decarbonylation. A l t e r n a t i v e l y , the 2015 cm" peak could be due to a ruthenium(III) hydride species (12); such a H R u intermediate could provide pathways f o r formation of hydrogénation products, f o r example, the cyclohexane observed i n the cyclohexen-4-al system. Such hydrides w i t h i n Ru(III) porphyrins might give r i s e to the a d d i t i o n a l r e d u c t i o n p o t e n t i a l waves i n the range -0.1 to +0.1 V. A d d i t i o n of hydroquinone was found to completely i n h i b i t decarbonylation of phenylacetaldehyde u s i n g the Ru(TPP) (PPh )2 c a t a l y s t system. This confirms that a r a d i c a l - t y p e process i s i n v o l v e d , e s p e c i a l l y as the hydroquinone shows no i n t e r a c t i o n with the Ru complexes. Indeed, the u v / v i s i b l e spectrum of the c a t a l y s t s o l u t i o n i n the presence of the hydroquinone was e s s e n t i a l l y that of Ru(TPP)( Bu3P)(C0) ( F i g . 1); there i s no i n d i c a t i o n of the 420 nm Soret band r e q u i r e d f o r c a t a l y s i s , and no decarbonylat i o n occurs. The s p e c t r a l changes during a decarbonylation are shown i n F i g . 4 f o r the Ru(TPP)(CO)( Βη Ρ0Η)/cyclohexen-4-al system; there are probably i s o s b e s t i c p o i n t s i n the Soret and v i s i b l e region i n the e a r l i e r stages of the r e a c t i o n , but even t u a l l y the peaks i n both regions c o l l a p s e , and a f i n a l b u i l d up of absorption above 600 nm ( c f . F i g . 1) gives r i s e to a green t i n g e . The i n i t i a l s p e c t r a l changes are probably due to gener a t i o n of Ru(III) s p e c i e s , as judged by comparable changes occur r i n g on Br2~oxidation of Ru(II) phosphine complexes (_1) , but f u r t h e r s t u d i e s are r e q u i r e d to confirm t h i s . n
