At 3M, Safety Conies First/ (It comeffast totlere s how.) In their search for new chemical I entities, scientists at 3M® wanted I to identify probable carcinogens using chemical structures, so that valuable resources for synthesis and testing of new compounds could be focused on the safest ones. They developed a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model for screening out carcinogenicity using Oxford Molecular's CAChe® program, along with several other computational tools. CAChe was used to calculate the geometry and electronic properties of the molecules. The ProjectLeader™ component of CAChe was used to control a series of calculations that could identify likely carcinogens. Using the model makes the complex screen for carcinogenicity easier to do, according to 3 M researchers. The system correctly classified 90% of the carcinogens in a test set of 301 chemicals. The same methodology is now being adapted to predict skin sensitization, further improving 3M's ability to target its efforts.
