News tween industrial and academic chemists and chemical engineers, to advance education in chemistry, and to provide support for academic chemical research with industrial funds. The news from the meeting is encouraging. Approximately 20 companies and 60 universities have already joined the CCR. A majority of the companies have pledged to increase their financial support by an amount proportional to the number of chemists and chemical engineers that they employ in the U. S. Most of these funds will be directed toward specific research projects; however, five companies have pledged 25% of their donations to a central fund to be distributed as unrestricted grants among the CCR's university members. The idea for the CCR was originally conceived by M. E. Pruitt, recently retired head of research and development for Dow Chemical Company.
