Ertl

Farkas

Prof. Gerhard Ertl of the Institute for Physical Chemistry, University of Mu nich, West Germany, and Dr. Adalbert Farkas, author, inventor, editor, and lecturer, will receive the Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis, and the Eugene J. Houdry Award in Applied Ca talysis, respectively, to be given by the Catalysis Society of North America. Ertl's award is based on his study of the chemical physics of chemisorption. In his work, Ertl has characterized the nature of chemisorbed species and of the interac tion of these species among themselves and with molecules from the gas phase. Farkas is being recognized for his con tributions to catalytic theories in hetero geneous catalysis, and contributions to catalytic technology. One of his many contributions was the development of a catalyst named "Dabco," for manufac turing polyurethane foam. The Emmett Award and the Houdry Award each consist of a plaque and an honorarium of $2500. The awards and presentation of lectures by the awardees will be given at the North American meeting of the Catalysis Society held in Chicago March 18-22. Dr. John E. Casida, professor of ento mology and director of the pesticide chemistry and toxicology laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, has received the 1978 Kenneth A. Spencer Award of the ACS Kansas City Section. Casida was honored for his contributions in pesticide discovery, development, safety, metabolism, and mode of action. His recent research efforts have estab lished the chemical and biochemical mechanisms for photodecomposition and metabolism of Pyrethroid insecticides. Dr. M. F. Hawthorne, professor of chemistry, University of California, Riv erside, will receive the ACS Nebraska Section award for outstanding contribu tions in chemistry. Hawthorne is editor of Inorganic Chemistry and on the editorial boards of Progress in Solid State Chem istry and Inorganic Synthesis. Dr. Frank W. Preston, founder of Pres ton Laboratories, Butler, Pa., will receive the 1979 Toledo Glass and Ceramic Award of the ACS Northwest Ohio Sec tion. The award recognizes Preston for his distinguished contributions in the fields of ceramic science and glass technology. March 19, 1979 C&EN
