Board approves $1 million in PRF grants; three receive $40,000 unrestricted grants More than $1 million in American Chemical Society-Petroleum Research Fund research grants was authorized by the ACS Board of Directors at the ACS meeting in San Francisco. The 58 new grants commit approx­ imately two thirds of the PRF grant and award funds authorized for 1968. Earlier grants for this year were au­ thorized by the Board at its December meeting (C&EN, Jan. 15, page 50). Additional grants to be made during 1968 will include up to 100 ACS-PRF Type G starter grants, each for $5000 over a two-year period, for young fac­ ulty members beginning their aca­ demic careers. Deadline for receipt of starter grant applications is June 1. Included in the latest Board action are three ACS-PRF Type C grants of $40,000 each. The recipients of these are Dr. Gilbert Stork of Columbia Uni­ versity, Dr. Henry L. Frisch of the State University of New York at Al­ bany, and Dr. Jerome A. Berson of the University of Wisconsin. The unrestricted Type C grant per­ mits the recipient to investigate any area of pure science which may pro­ vide a basis for subsequent research in the petroleum field. The grants are for a four-year period but may be used at any desired rate. Dr. Stork, professor of chemistry at Columbia since 1966, will use his grant for work in new synthetic methods. Specific problems he will consider are control of stereochemistry in catalytic hydrogénation, methods for the stereospecific synthesis of trisubstituted olefins, cyclopropyl ketones as initiators of polyene cyclization, and use of silicon compounds in carbon-carbon bond formation. Dr. Frisch has been professor of chemistry at Albany since last fall. He intends to use his grant to study "chemical instabilities" in flowing chemical systems, nonlinear problems leading to chemically influenced morphological transformations, statistical mechanics of dense liquids, transport in polymers, and topological isomerism of macromolecular systems. Dr. Berson, professor of chemistry at Wisconsin, plans to use his grant for a mechanistic study of the thermally effected migration of groups on polyene chains and rings with special reference to stereochemical phenomena. His results will bear on theoretical problems of bond strength and of orbital symmetry control.

The tables on pages 64 and 66 list all the new ACS-PRF grant and award recipients. Johnson named to Analytical board Dr. Donald R. Johnson, research and engineering manager of the instruments products division at Du Pont, has been named to the advisory board of Analytical Chemistry. Dr. Johnson will fill the unexpired term (1967-69) of the late Dr. Stephen Dal Nogare.

Appointment President R. W. Cairns appointed Dr. Charles Harmison, chairman of the Detroit Section, to represent ACS at the International Science Fair in Detroit to be held May 15-18.

"Comprehensive Results of the 1967 Pension Plan Survey" is available from the American Chemical Society. The booklet, containing detailed results of the pension plan survey sponsored by the ACS Council Committee on Professional Relations, provides information on financing, eligibility, vesting, retirement benefit formula, early retirement provisions, and funding as correlated with type of employer, size of employer, and geographic location. A summary of the survey can be found in C&EN, March 25, page 67. The booklets of detailed results are $2.50 each and can be ordered from the American Chemical Society, Special Issues Sales, 1155—16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036.
