CHEMICAL
SOCIETY will provide stipends at the rate of $2,500 per year with the understanding that the institutions at which recipients will work will provide additional stipends, presumably at least SI,000 per year. Recipients may be asked to teach not to exceed five hours per week for a period not exceeding thirty-six weeks per year in return for the stipend furnished by the institution. Section
A new section in Chemical Abstracts entitled "Economic Poisons" has jjust been created. The assistant editor in charge is Charles H. Richardson, wholfctas long served Chemical Abstracts eiTectiwiely as an abstractor and as an assistant editor for the Zoology subsection under Biologi cal Chemistry. The new section vwill follow Section 15 (formerly "Soils, Fer tilizers, and Agricultural Poisons" Eind now "Soils and Fertilizers") as 15A. In the new section will be placed all abstrua-cts relating principally t o insecticides, to poisons for the various invertebrate aniiraals other than insects, as spiders, ticks, mim.es, millepedes, crustaceans, mollusks, Eund nematodes, to poisons for rodents and ollher mammalian pests, to fungicides, and t o weed killers. Abstracts relating t o bac tericides will remain in other suitable sections, except when these come willhin the domain of the plant pathologist. Nomenclature As apart of the Introduction to the 1B>45 Subject Index t o .Chemical Abstracts, t o appear late in February, a lengthy discus sion of chemical nomenclature as applied to the indexing of compounds will appear. The nomenclature problem in chemiflttry is a big one and i t is hoped that this fliscussion will be of interest and value to students of nomenclature as well as t o users of t h e CJiemical Abstracts indexes. An effort has been made over many years to use good, systematic chemical nomen clature in these indexes, with due con sideration given to (a) usage, (6) inkernational nomenclature rules, and (c) llhe requirements of indexing. Photocopying Service An arrangement is being completed which will make it possible for members of the AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY a t a
small cost to obtain either a photoprint or a microfilm copy of a n y scientific or technical paper needed by turning to one place if that paper is available anywhere in the United States. This will eliminate troublesome, time-consuming, and expen sive shopping around. This service, though planned by Chemical Abstracts and intended t o supplement t h e supplying of abstracts, is not to be conducted by the Abstracts office, where journal a n d other facilities would be inadequate.
