Effervescent, enthusiastic, energetic, Aila Bursnall has a passion for all things green. Dressed for duty, Aila strides through the 50-acre site of Eastman's fine chemicals plant in Wales in her green helmet like a woman on a mission. Because she is What mission? It could be one of a hundred that fall to her in the position of environment manager at Eastman's Peboc Division in the town of Llangefni. Why a green helmet? She chose it when she was "going through a green phase/' which has lasted just about all her life. So why would an ardent environmentalist work in the chemical industry? Aila says it was a natural choice. She is committed to environmental activism from within. She'd rather understand the situation and work from the inside to improve things than be on the outside, not understand and simply criticize. So she teaches, she trains, she lectures, she monitors, she organizes, she meets with compliance regulators and members ofthe community. Aila is an environmental ambassador-at-large on behalf of Eastman and the chemical industry as a whole. Which brings us to the windsock. Aila is the first line of response for community feedback about the Peboc plant— often as simple as the windsock is "looking awfully tatty/' So Aila makes sure a new one goes up right away. As Aila sees it, "Ifthe community can trust us on the little things—like a windsock, they can trust us on the big things—like air and water quality and safety/' Sometimes getting a little carried away can make a big difference.
