MINOT'S LEDGE LIGHT, one of America's most famous wave¬ -swept lighthouses, guards ships against treacherous reefs 61/2 miles southwest of the entrance to Boston Harbor. The first tower at Minors Ledge, an openwork iron pile structure com­ pleted in 1850, was toppled into the sea by a great storm in 1851. The second tower, built of interlocking granite blocks and completed in 1860, still stands solidly on the ledge.
