Supporting Information Preparation of graphene oxide Graphite oxide was synthesized from natural graphite flakes by Staudenmaier method. Briefly, natural graphite (5 g) was added into a mixture of 87.5 ml concentrated sulfuric acid and 45 ml concentrated nitric acid in a 500ml three neck flask at 0 oC. KClO3 (55 g) was slowly added in 11 portions to keep the temperature below 5 oC. After a reaction time of 96 h at room temperature, the suspension was centrifuged and washed with plenty of deionized water until pH ≈ 7. Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by exfoliating graphite oxide in deionized water with the aid of ultrasonication using a JY99-2 DN ultrasonicator (Ningbo, China).
