With the help of our dedicated review authors, ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY has reorganized some of the Fundamental Reviews this year. This realigning, dropping, adding, and combining are designed to reflect changes in emphasis and importance of various areas of analytical chemistry. Some changes have been made in all three of the major areas: chromatography, electrochemistry, and spectrometry. These changes can best be determined by noting new titles for some of the reviews. We also welcome several new authors who replace authors who had written reviews for us for many years. Missing this year are reviews on organic polarography; electroanalysis and coulometric analysis; and electron spin resonance. The latter will appear in 1978 while the former two are mainly covered in other reviews. Appearing this year after an absence in 1974 is a review on statistical and mathematical methods in analytical chemistry. The review on infrared spectrometry has been put together from computer searching of Chemical Abstracts' data base and was supplied to the printer in the form of computer-readable magnetic tape. Robert McDonald, who has labored long and hard with this system, and the editors would greatly appreciate comments from our readers on the usefulness of this type of presentation. Our review authors were asked to be more critical and selective in coverage of their respective fields so that we can continue our reviews program within a reasonable number of pages. Also, we aim to have the space devoted to individual reviews bear some relation to the relative activity and significance of the area covered. Most of our authors have cooperated with these aims even though this type of review may be more difficult than a review with more exhaustive literature coverage. This year authors have not been supplied with free reprints. Although some authors have chosen to purchase reprints, others have not. We urge interested persons to purchase extra copies of the review issue, if they wish, or, better yet, to subscribe to the journal in lieu of requesting reprints from individual authors. We call attention to the outstandingly generous contributions of time and effort by our authors. It is only through their work and the cooperation of the institutions with which they are affiliated that the reviews are made possible. On our own behalf and for our thousands of readers, we express our sincere thanks and appreciation. Photographs and short biographical sketches of our authors appear with the individual reviews. ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY'S annual reviews' program began in January 1949 when the first group of 29 fundamental reviews occupied 171 pages. The first review in this series was on light absorption spectrometry and was written by M. G. Mellon. In later years Prof. Mellon called on David Boltz to help in the preparation of this review. This year marks the last appearance of the review on this subject by these two authors. Prof. Mellon asked to be relieved of the chore, and David Boltz died unexpectedly in January of this year. Since this continuous authorship of a review constitutes a record in the history of our reviews program, we ask our readers to take special note of the years of devoted service to the scientific community contributed by Drs. Boltz and Mellon. ii • A N A L Y T I C A L
