The two-stcp, acid-catalyzed inethnnolysis of diethyl :icetal has been investigated by gas chromatography. T h e reaction proceeds by two conseciiti\-e reversible first order reactions correspontling to the stepwise exchange of the acetal ethoxy r o u p s . The rate of both steps shon-s first order dependence on acid concentration anti is iridepeiident of alcohol concentration. Gas ciiruiiiatograpiij. is s!iowii to be ideilly suited for clioosing tiie re:tctioii period for masiniiini yield of stabl:, inter1iiedi:ites in consecutive reactions. The equilibriurii c m s t a n t s for both of the two ccnisecutive reactions were determined simultaneously from tiie conccntratioris of tile five components i n the equilibriuiii iriirture and are e q u d t o 4.65 ;t 0.00 :ind 1.01 =k 0.04, respectively. Arr11c;iiiis energies and entropics of activation have been obtained from reaction rates ~iieasuredas a function of temperature. A mechanisin analogous t o t h a t of the hydrolysis reaction is proposed. Xo previous thermodynamic or kinetic studies on the alcoholvsis of acetals have been reportcd because of the lack of a suitable analytical method

As early as 1856 Wurtz? reported the synthesis of the unsymmetrical methyl ethyl acetal by heating a mixture of methanol and ethanol with pyrolusite and sulfuric acid. While Riibencamp3 was unable to coilfirm the cxistence of unsymmetrical acetals, o t l i ~ r s ~ claimed -~ successful preim-ation of several mixed acetals. Because of tlie lack of a17 effective analytical tool, 110 rate or equilibrium studies h a w been made on the alcoholysis of simple aliphatic zcetnls. Recently Piantadosi, rt al ,y prepared cyclic glycerol acetals and determined tlie equilibrium constant for the interconversion of tlie 1,?- and the 1,3-benzylidene qlycerol acetals by ultraviolct spcctrophotometry. This analytical technique may be applied onlv to those acctils qi\-ing distinctive absorptio:? spectra. During rccent years gas chromatography has bwri employed t o an iiicreasing extent in the determii~ationof reaction rates and thermodynamic constants. By taking advantage of this newly developed analytical tool, the two-step, acidcxtalyzed rnethanolysis of diethyl acetal has hcen investigatcd. The equilibrium constants for the two consecutiw reactions involved have been determined simultaneously from the concentrations of the five components in the equilibrium mixture. Consecutive rate constants and activation energies have also been measured and a renction meclianis~n proposed. G:JS chromatography is shown to be idenlly suited for choosing the reaction period for ninsinium yield of stable intermediates in consecutive reactions.
