Ignition of Succinic Acid Among the unknown compounds that we gave to students in the course of identification of organic compounds was suecinie acid. This unknown was easily found by the students just from the results of ignition. The ignition of succinic acid caused every one in the laboratory to cough. No one could stand or resist coughing when very small amounts of the compound were ignited. Ignition of other compounds used as unknowns did not cause such a phenomenon. The fumes generated from the ignition were colorless and orderless. We had to omit sueeinie acid from our list of unknowns since it was so easily found by students.
