KOPPERS TO
INDUSTRY CHEMICAL
0n developments in coal carbonization, light oil refining and coal tar processing
The whole coal carbonization industry has such a profound effect u p o n the field of synthetic organic chemicals that the chemical industry has a legitimate interest in what is currently being done by Koppers. Here are some of the interesting facts: Koppers is building, for various companies: • 11 coke oven plants, involving 618 ovens with an annual new coke producing capacity of 3,000,000 tons. • 3 completely-new by-product plants with an annual tar producing capacity o f 48,000,000 gallons and an annual ammonium sulfate producing capacity of 60,000 tons. • 7 light oil recovery and refining plants with the capacity to recover and refine 28,000,000 gallons of light oil annually. Refined products will include approximately 4,000,000 gallons of toluol per year. • 2 oil refinery gas purification plants which will remove sulfur that may be converted into sulfuric
acid in the total amount of approximately 50,000 tons per year. • 2 coke oven gas purification plants in which sulfur is converted to sulfuric acid in the amount of 7,500 tons per year and elemental sulfur is produced for agricultural purposes in the amount of 1,800 tons per year. • 1 semi-water gas plant with a capacity of about 20,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day, which is to be used in the production of synthetic ammonia. • Various gas producer plants, chemical production units, tar distillation plants, etc. Koppers is producing tar products and related chemicals at a tremendously-increased rate and is carrying on development work in these fields: • Construction of pyridine plants that have helped to eliminate the scarcity of that material and provide an ample supply for the medicinals, dyes, textile chemicals based on pyridine which have been recently developed.
