Two Dinitroso Compounds Now used as Blowing Agents for Expanding Elastomers and Resins

One or the other of our team of two dinitroso compounds is ideally suited for the production of chemically expanded elastomers or resins. The question of which blowing agent to use for a particular job depends on the final properties desired. Here's a brief resume of their respective properties. "UNICEL" ND Blowing Agent-An odorless, cream-colored powder, the active ingredient of which is dinitrosopentam ethyl enetetramine :

inert diluent to render it safe to ship and handle in bulk; it has excellent stability when stored under normal conditions. Under the influence of heat, "UNICEL" T\D decomposes, releasing nitrogen rap­ idly and efficiently. It has been used primarily for the production of closedcell expanded rubber. However, it can also be used to make open-cell sponge. "UNIC.EI." N D

used primarily for expanding elastomers, BL-353 is best suited for producing ex­ panded resins, PVC in particular. The active ingredient in BL-353 is N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dinitrosoterephthalamide: NO

Using BL-353, low density PVC foam can be made at atmospheric pressure without special equipment. What's more, it's equally well-suited for the production of cellular vinyl, in which, unlike vinyl foam, the cells are not interconnected. With only slight variations in the for­ m u l a t i o n s and processing conditions, vinyl foam or cellular vinyl in a wide range of physical properties is obtainable. So whether you work with elastomers or with resins, whether you need hardness or resiliency, high or low density, one of these chemical blowing agents can solve your problem. 32

Any Other Uses f o r Dinitroso Compounds?

The use of these nitroso compounds as blowing agents takes advantage of their nitrogen-releasing properties. Do you have other applications calling for lowcost generation of molecular nitrogen in situ? One or the other of these nitroso com­ pounds may also be useful as an anti­ oxidant, as an anti-scorch agent for rub­ ber, or as an. intermediate in other organic syntheses. With the increased use of high-tempera­ ture operations in the chemical process industries, a need developed for an eco­ nomical, efficient, heat transfei medium to bridge the gap between steam and direct-fire heating. "Hitec'' heat transfer salt helps meet this need. k 'Hitec" is a eutectic mixture of sodium nitrite, sodium nitrate, and potassium ni­ trate, and is used as a heat transfer medi­ um for both heating and cooling opera­ tions in the 300-1000° F temperature range. "Hitec" has found wide acceptance in such process operations as high-tempera­ ture distillation, preheating of reactants, and maintenance of reactor temperatures because of its low melting point ( 288°F), high heat transfer coefficients, thermal stability and low cost. Moreover, **Hitec'' is non-flammable, non-explosive, and presents no toxicity problem under rec­ ommended conditions of use. Because 'Tlitoc*' can be used at atmos­ pheric pressure, investment and operat­ ing costs are held to a minimum. Simi­ larly, its excellent thermodynamic prop­ erties mean mini­ mum surface area HITEC — and equipment size requirements. T h e r e is no need for more state label laws. However, if there are to b e more state laws, the great need is for uniform laws. Not only t h e wel­ fare of t h e chemical industry but the economy in general can be adversely affected b y lack of uniformity in state laws. Q. Are state latvs such a "patchwork" that manufacturers must make separate packaging, runs for different states? A. In t h e chemical industry this is no problem. A label that follows LAPI principles is acceptable in all states. Although precise wording differs from state to state, state laws generally say that a label complies with the law if it is a practical equivalent. Q. Wliat are MCA and the LAPI committee doing to encourage uni­ formity in state laws? A. We are working with Congress, the Department of Health, Education a n d Welfare, a n d state legislatures. W e are maintaining liaison with indus­ try associations, state manufacturing groups, associations of government offi­ cials, a n d professional societies. In this way we h o p e to set a pattern for future control legislation b a s e d o n sound principles.

Industry spokesmen agree that no end is yet in sight for polyethylene production increases. Du Pont hasn't yet reached any decision on capacity, a n d doesn't ex­ pect to until after Jan. 1, 1958.
