New Chlorofluorocarbons Offered in Research Quantities Four new chlorofluorocarbons are now being offered in research quantities by Hooker Electrochemical Co. These compounds, based on Hexachlorobutadiene (C-46(R)) and Hexachlorocyclopentadiene (C-56(R)) are: 2,3-Dichlorohexafluorobutene-2 1,2-Dichlorohexafluorocyclopentene-l 2,2,3,3-Tetrachlorohexafluorobutane 2,2,3-Trichloroheptafluorobutane The first, 2,3-dichlorohexafluorobutene-2, is a relatively reactive chemical intermediate for preparing such compounds as chlorofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, fluorinated monomers, and derivatives of chlorofluoro and perfluoro acids. According to Hooker, applications for these materials are found in such fields as plastics, refrigeration, textiles, paints, and protective coatings. The reactivity of 1,2-dichlorohexafluorocyclopentene-1 provided by the double bond makes possible a unique method for the preparation of highly fluorinated compounds containing functional groups. Oxidation gives an intermediate for a variety of compounds such as the acid halide, amide, esters, alcohols, and the anhydride. These compounds are said to be of value in the preparation of polyester resins, polyamide resins, hydraulic fluids, elastomers, and wetting agents. The company says that other reactions of this material result in an interesting series of chlorofluorocarbons that should find applications as monomers, coolants, dielectrics, and refrigerants. A solid under normal conditions, 2,2,3,3-tetrachlorohexafluorobutane is of interest in protective coatings, according to the company, and may be of value as a fumigant. Substitution of chlorine atoms by fluorine leads to a series of compounds with possible value as dielectrics, coolants, and refrigerants the company says. The high fluorine content and the perhalogenated nature of the last compound, 2,2,3-trichloroheptafluorobutane, are said to be responsible for its resistance to common oxidizing agents. In conjunction with its thermodynamic and electrical characteristics, this property suggests applications as a coolant, 78 A

a dielectric, and a refrigerant, the company says. 18 Industrial Solvent

A new industrial solvent, announced by Speco, Inc., is reputed to have cleaning properties closely resembling carbon tetrachloride, but up to 20 times less toxicity. According to the manufacturer the new solvent, named Vinsol, can be used with complete safety for virtually all applications, including those in confined areas. In addition it is nonflammable, which eliminates danger of fire or explosion when used near open flames or next to grinding equipment. The new material is recommended for removing oil, grease, wax, and tars from metal products and is equally adaptable for cold cleaning, bucket cleaning, and dip cleaning. 19

CHEMICALS REAGENTS MATERIALS

trates containing the emulsifier disperse instantly upon addition to water. Besides flash dispersion, the new emulsifier is said to produce emulsions stable in hard and soft water. Any separation occurring in the emulsion on prolonged standing is easily redispersed, and the compound does not cause pentachlorophenol to crystallize from solution. Acceptable emulsions can be produced with one to three per cent emulsifier. 21 Propionaldehyde

Propionaldehyde produced by Union Carbide & Carbon's new Oxo unit is now being supplied in tank car quantities. A reactive intermediate, it is said to be a broadly useful chemical raw material with applications that parallel those of acetaldehyde. According to a company spokesman it makes resinous products with phenol, forms propylamines useful as rubber accelerators with ammonia, yields trimethyol ethane with formaldehyde, and undergoes aldol condensations to make higher alcohols, acids, aldehydes, and diols. 22

Epoxy Resins

A new series of epoxy resins developed specifically for corrosion-resistant surface coatings is announced by Union Carbide & Carbon Corp. Currently there are four products available which can be formulated into high-quality air-drying or baking finishes for steel, aluminum, zinc, tin plate, and wood. The company says they offer excellent adhesion and resistance to weather, salt spray, corrosive fumes, and chemicals, and in properly formulated coatings can be applied to most surfaces by brush, spray, roller, flow, or dip-coating. Two of these products are designed to react with amines, polyamides, and urea-formaldehyde resins. One is in solution for easy handling; the other is a solid resin product. Two others, though primarily designed to esterify with vegetable oil acids, also undergo all the usual epoxy reactions. 20 Pentachlorophenol Emulsifier

A new chemical developed specifically for emulsification of pentachlorophenol in water is announced by the Chemical Division of Armour & Co. The dark red liquid chemical is a cationic surface active agent called Emulsifier 1990-A, and according to the company, concen-

Aliène Pilot plant quantities of Aliène are being offered by Columbia Organic Chemicals Co. A gas which boils at —34.3° C , the hydrocarbon is isomerized to methyl acetylene; pyrolysis yields liquid and solid polymers depending upon temperature. Under both acid and basic conditions, additions yield both saturated and unsaturated compounds having further reactive centers. 23 Thermosetting Plastic

Development and production of a strong, clear, thermosetting plastic is announced by the Homalite Corp. According to the company, the new material does not support combustion and although it chars when direct flame is applied, it will not continue to burn when the flame is removed. Clear and almost colorless, it is said to provide scratch resistance, to resist crazing, to be a better thermal insulator than glass, and to be insoluble in every known solvent. It can be sawed, drilled, bored, and machined and is available in 24 X 30 in. sheets. 24 For further information, see coupon on page 69 A ANALYTICAL

NEW CHEMICALS Solantine Blue Green Dye

lab Director Proves Twin Shell Blender* Just Right for Job

Addition of Solantine Blue Green BFL to its line of nondusting, light-fast direct dyes is announced by National Aniline Division, Allied Chemical & Dye Corp. According to the company, this new product produces a bright bluish-green shade on cotton and rayon which may be discharged to an excellent white with neutral and alkaline dis charge pastes. Company also says it exhibits excellent fastness to light, rubbing, alkalies, dry cleaning, sea water, and water; very good fastness to washing and perspiration; and good fastness to acids, mercerizing, and hot pressing. 25

When Durkee, the big manufacturer of seasoning salts, bought a 30 cu. ft. capacity |»-k twin shell blender, Tech nical Director Stewart Woodruff knew in advance it was the "just right" blender for the job. He knew because he had blended their "difficult" ingredients perfectly in a 4-quart |»-U blender in their lab— and results in (>4t lab models can be scaled up exactly to large production runs. Shells on lab models come in trans parent Lucite or stainless steel, in capacities from one pint to 8 quarts. Production models then range up to 1000 cu. ft. capacity. Each retains the twin-shell's unique 5-way blending action. To find out how you, too, can "pre test" a p-k twin-shell blender in your plant, lab or mill, write today.
