Walter J. Murphy

1899-1959 A

great number of our readers have come to know Walter J. Murphy over the years and his passing comes as a shock t o all of us. When he took over the editorship of the ACS Applied Publications in 1943, ASALHTICAL CHEMISTRY was already an outstanding publication in its field and his aim was to keep it so. H e was not an expert in analysis, but he did possess the ability t o see clearly the trends of the future and sought the advice of experts as to the best ways for the journal t o attract and publish papers of the then new physical approaches to analysis. K i t h this in mind the Advisory Board was enlarged to include broader fields of interest to analytical chemists. I n addition to the publication of papers, he believed the journal should show leadership in the promotion of the analytical profession. This leadership was demonstrated in his influence in the initiation of the Fisher Award. Dr. Murphy's enthusiasm and ever ready rvillingness to publicize and work with the Division of Analytical Chemistry n-as typical of his belief that a publication should do more than record scientific findings. His editorial influence in the promotion of analytical research in universities was undertaken a t a time when too little of such research rvas being done. From such promotion came the hlerck Fellowship Award, LT-hich did much to attract promising young men into the analytical field. It has been our good fortune over the years to have been associated with the journal and with D r . Murphy, and it has always been a source of satisfaction to know t h a t the journal has been a force in the analytical field, not by accident but by careful planning and hard work. I t is, therefore, a privilege to pay tribute to a man whose life has been so fruitful in helping others. W e shall miss his friendly and constructive counsel, but me shall continue our effort to maintain the high editorial and ethical standards which all of us who read the journal have come to expect.
