Mercury For the sample, place 1.0 g in a 125 mL conical flask, and add 10 mL of water. For the standard, place 10 mL of water in a similar flask, and add 0.05 μg of mercury [0.5 mL of a solution prepared freshly by diluting 1.0 mL of mercury ion (Hg) standard solution with water to 500 mL]. Add 2 mL of 4% potassium permanganate solution and 2 mL of 25% sulfuric acid reagent solution to each flask. Heat on a hot plate (~100 °C) for 30 min, then cool to room temperature. Transfer the contents of the sample flask to the aeration vessel, making the total volume about 50 mL. Rinse the flask with 4 mL of 10% hydroxylamine hydrochloride reagent solution, and add this to the aeration vessel also. Complete the reduction of manganese dioxide and mercury with 2 mL of 10% stannous chloride solution. Treat the standard solution in the same way. Obtain the peak height for the sample and standard solutions by CVAAS [Part 2: Trace and Ultratrace Elemental Analysis; Mercury Determination by CVAAS]. The peak height for the sample should not exceed that for the standard.
