Preventing Spillage When Pouring Mercury A glass adapter of the type used in distillations has proved effective in preventing spillage during mercury transfers. If the adapter is held a t approximately the angle indicated in the figure, and if the mercury undergoes a free fall of only a, few mm before reaching the adapter, there is virtually no mercury spillage. Any splashing is forward into the adapter rather than back out its mouth. The tapered adapter plugs the bottle onenine. -. and this o r e vents spLshing mercury from escaping. Larger openings can be plugged by a rubher stopper around the adapter tip or by a, piece of paper which is taped to the opening and has a. hole through which the adapter tip fitssnugly.
