A heaw walled glass tuhe fits inside an aluminum cvlinder having a iubher base. An observation window is cut into the bottom of the aluminum tuhe. A piston with small rubber " 0 seals is used to compress the gas in the tuhe. Suggested Uses This demonstration shows the relationship between pressure and temperature. When a small piece of tissue is placed in the bottom of the glass tuhe, and the piston is rapidly pushed, the tissue will ignite. Most students find this an exciting demonstration since it seems to go against what they "know" to he true. Possible AdaptationslComments This is an interest raising demonstration and can be used to allow vou to introduce a discussion of diesel engines and other topics. This is a very worthwhile use of thirteen dollars!

QA (QuantitativeAnalysis) Spectroscope Supplier:

The spectroscope is made of plastic and is 20 cm long and the internal scale is ahout 37 cm long. It is hand held and seems relatively unbreakable. Suggested Uses Students can measure the wavelength of light from 4000 to 7000 A and can see the relation between the spectrum and the absorption hands. With the cuvet supplied, liquids can also be tested for their optical properties. After working with identified samples, the student can then use the spectroscope to identify unknowns by their wavelengths, not just their colors. Possible AdaptatlonslComments With the optional Light Absorption Kit (cat. # 16575) the effects of colored filters on the spectrum can he observed and with the cuvet liquids can he studied. This seems to he an excellent way of "quantifying" the study of the spectrum, light and absorption bands without going to a lot of expense. In the 4 years I have used these spectroscopes, not a one has been damaged or made inoperable. 668
