T h i s , the eighth symposium on Resources for the Chemical Industry, embraces that geographic area known as the South Atlantic States-the eight states of Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, plus the District of Columbia. An area of 1100 miles long and 400 miles wide, it is bounded on the north by the highly populous and industrial Middle Atlantic States, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by the Straits of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, and on the west by the states of the East Central group. Generalizing their past, the South Atlantic States have been an area steeped in history and slow to develop industrial potential, but this is no longer a factual point. Encouraged by abundant raw materials, outside capital, adequate labor supply, climate and growing markets, this section is maintaining the national average in industrial growth. Agriculture still is in the top position from the standpoint of total employment, but the total value of agricultural products is below that of textiles and of,-the same order of magnitude as chemicals. Value of chemical products for the area is second only to textiles in value added by manufacture. Following in order are food and kindred products, lumber, primary metals, and paper and allied products. W. P. BOYER, Chairman
