NICKEL TRENDS

Sherritt research activities directed at greater nickel supply

At Sherritt, research is two-directional. • First, to improve or develop refining and processing techniques. Second, to explore new nickel applications. • For example, Sherritt recently modified its proven ammonia leaching and hydrogen reduction processes to permit the recovery of nickel from latérite ores. From these ores, abundant in many countries throughout the world, will come the future supplies of nickel. • As an example of new nickel applications, Sherritt developed a process for rolling strip directly from nickel powder. Then, when t h e world's silver shortage became serious, Sherritt provided coin blanks made from this strip to meet the critical specifications of government mints. • Right now, Sherritt is looking to the future by developing new forms of nickel. You can expect to hear more about them as time goes on. • Because of this research, Sherritt will be there to meet your nickel needs of tomorrow with processes, technology, and products.
