STRONG ORGANIC BASE . . .
When an inorganic alkali is added t o Benzyltrimethylammonium Chloride in aqueous solution, Benzyltrimethylammonium Hydroxide is formed. This compound is one of the strongest organic bases and a powerful catalyst for many organic reactions. T h e anhydrous chloride is heat-stable below approximately 135C— b u t above this temperature decomposition begins with the formation of benzyl chloride and trimethylamine. T h e hydroxide decomposes in aqueous solutions a t somewhat lower temperatures t h a n the chloride. We recommend t h a t it be investigated for its reaction possibilities—sus an analytical reagent, and for the synthesis of other useful materials tii~ eluding pharmaceuticals and textile specialties. Can you use Benzyltrimethylammonium Chloride? I t is available jfari limited commercial quantities; Write for a sample. ^
