Preface Synthetic macromolecules with higher structural order are being developed as new generation materials for application in synthetic enzymes, asymmetric reagents, catalysts, electronic switches and biosensors, tissue engineering, peptide drugs, and responsive drug delivery systems. The highly interdisciplinary area includes organic and polymer synthesis, peptide design and synthesis, self-assembled macromolecules, computational studies to complement spectroscopic higher structural order determination, interaction of conformationally (or higher structurally) organized oligomers and polymers with biological systems. This book is based on an American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Polymer Chemistry, Inc. symposium held at the 219 ACS National Meeting in San Francisco, California, March 26-30, 2000. The goal of the symposium was targeting presentations of different subtopics to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the area and to encourage collaboration among researchers in the continuing development of synthetic macromolecules with higher structural order. The potential application of non-natural macromolecular systems with almost biospecific type functional properties is fascinating and will require that researchers in the complementing subtopic areas work and learn together. The book is not encyclopedic but combines complementing areas of synthetic peptides, macromolecular assemblies, and synthetic polymers to give an overall perspective. The research reported in the chapters set the stage for designing and starting innovative studies in synthetic macromolecular systems with secondary and tertiary structural order. The book Synthetic Macromolecules with Higher Structural Order will serve as an excellent reference book and as a guide to new comers and established scientists in this interdisciplinary research area. The book will be of interest to a diverse group of scientist including organic and physical chemists, peptide chemists, polymer chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists, and molecular scientists. th

It is a pleasure to express my gratitude to the ACS Division of Polymer Chemistry, Inc. Programming Committee for approving and scheduling the symposium in San Francisco in 2000. The funding support of the symposium was provided by the ACS Division of Polymer Chemistry, Inc. and the ACS PRF Grant # 35812-SE. I greatly appreciate the help of Kelly Dennis and Stacy VanDerWall in acquisitions and Margaret Brown in editorial and production of the ACS Books Department for providing support and guidance to bring this book to fruitful completion. Thanks also to Anne Wilson for supporting the idea for a book on this topic and getting me started. Finally, sincere appreciation and thanks to the contributors for their timely efforts and for sharing their valuable research results in this forum.
