New Products, Continued is upended in the top of the tube and the water passes through glass fiber filters which remove physical impurities before the water reaches the exchange resins. The output is drawn off through a polyvinyl tube in the base. The gray metal base requires only 48 square inches of table space and contains a conductivity meter which upon pressing a button registers instantly the quality of the water being produced. An accurate meter scale tells when the resin cartridge needs replacement. Analytical Balance
... 7 A new analytical balance, called the Speedigram, has been introduced by Voland & Sons, Inc. This balance reads directly up to 100 grams without weights. An extra 100gram weight is supplied, however, so that the full capacity is 200 grams. The sensitivity is 0.05 mg. at full load. Numbers on dials indicate weights to be deposited on pan.
Steel Analysis ... 8 A direct reading method of analysis for stainless steels has been developed by the Applied Research Laboratories. The total time of analysis for all metallic elements is 2 to 3 minutes including sample preparation. According to the manufacturer the accuracy is equivalent to present routine chemical methods. The equipment utilized consists of a 2-meter spectrometer, a recording console, and a multisource. The precision attained for chromium and nickel is claimed to be high. A variety of rolled and cast samples repeatedly provide standard deviations from 0.3 to 0.4% of the quantity measured. Thus for an 18% chromium determination this represents an error of 0.07%; for an 8 % nickel determination an error of 0.03%.
Water Hardness Determination
... 9
The Hack Chemical Co. has introduced the new versenate method for determining total hardness in water. Claimed to be more accurate and rapid than the soap method, this new method was developed by Harvey Diehl at Iowa State College in cooperation with Clifford Hack. In their method an organic dye serves to indicate the end point of the titration by a color change of red to blue. The standard titrating solution is prepared from reagent grade disodium dihydrogen ethylenediamine tetraacetate (sodium dihydrogen versenate). Geiger Counter . . . 70 A new thin mica, end-window counter has been announced by Nuclear Intruments and Chemical Corp. Claimed to have great stability, long counting life, and negligible leakage this model, D31, has a plateau length of 200 to 300 volts, with a slope of 3 % per hundred volts. Threshold voltage is between 1050 and 1300 volts and counting life is 10s counts. Model D31 is available with window thickness from 2 to 3.9 mg. per sq. cm. Model D32, of identical construction, is available with window thickness between 1.5 and 2.0 mg. per sq. cm.
