Barbier-'Wielar ' Degradation of VIb to trans-2-Phenyl0.600-g. sample of cyclohexaneaceti: Acid (IIIb) .-A trans-@-(2-pheny:vp ohexane)-propionic acid (m. p. 7882 ") was subjec .e: to the Barbier-Wieland degradation under previously described14 conditions except that the time of refluxing with acetic anhydride was increased t o two and one-half hours. The crude product (IIIb) con; sisted of 0.1.10 g. (23%) of a white powder, m. p. 110-114 (previous softening). Recrystal1i:ation from hexane gave colorless plates, m. p. 113.5-114.5 ,showing no depression in m. p. when admixed with an authentic sample of trans2-phenylcydohexaneacetic acid.

Summary The configurations of the cis- and trans-2-phenylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids and the cis- and transp- (2-pheny~cyc~ohexane) -propionic acids have been provedby relating these acids, via the Arndt-

The Reaction of Diazoketones with Heterocyclic Amine Salts BY L. CARROLL KINGAND F. M. MILLER It has been found that diazoketones react with salts of certain heterocyclic amines to yield the corresponding quaternary salts.' Using diazoacetophenone, the reaction may be formulated as C&,COCHNp
