IN CORROSION RESISTANT MATERIALS?

Furfuryl alcohol (FA) resins offer superior heat and chemical resistance to most solvents, acids and alkalies over a wide range of concentrations and temperatures. Mortars based o n FA resins are used for jointing tile and brick in the c o n s t r u c t i o n of floors, digester linings and pickling tanks. Glass or asbestos reinforced FA resins are used to produce chemically inert pipe, valves and vessels.

industry for compact and lower cost reactors, in equipment for handling molten metals and for liquid cooled electrodes.

Q

IN ADHESIVES?

FA-modified urea-formaldehyde resins provide excellent "gap-filling" low shrinkage cements. Furfuryl alcohol improves the craze resistance and gives a more convenient balance between pot life and curing time. These resins are especially suited to furniture gluing applications.

IN IMPREGNATING SOLUTIONS? Q

Among the major merits of furfuryl alcohol in impregnating solutions are its easy resinification with acid and excellent wetting and penetrating characteristics. For many years high grade laboratory equipment—laboratory table tops, sinks, etc.—have been manufactured by impregnating porous stoneware and sandstone with FA resins. The cured products are n o n porous and have improved hardness and ffexural strength. In another type of application FA and its polymers are used to produce premium quality, low permeability graphite. FA resins offer the best blend of properties including a very high carbon yield, high density coupled with low shrinkage and low electrical resistance. This new impervious graphite is used in the nuclear

IN FOUNDRY BINDERS?

The ability of FA to resinify in the presence of acids with or without the addition of heat makes it particularly effective in bonding sand to make foundry cores. The cores have sufficient hot strength to withstand the erosion of molten m e t a l yet collapse readily after the metal has been poured.

LOOK TO THE FUTURE

Let your imagination soar. There are still many opportunities for your ideas to unlock a most profitable future with FA resins for uses yet undiscovered. For general i n f o r m a t i o n on the chemistry, properties and uses of furfuryl alcohol write for BULLETIN 205-A
