childbearing age, the need for increased safety awareness in academic training, safety needs of secondary school laboratories, and new ACS short courses on chemical safety now under development. Phillip S. Landis, Chairman Economic Status Two major programs were delineated by the Committee on Economic Status. Both are in keeping with the need for information on future requirements for chemists and chemical engineers in the U.S. For one program, the committee asked the Subcommittee on Supply & Demand to develop plans for improving efforts to gather and analyze information on the supply of and need for chemical professionals in the U.S. through the year 2000. For the other, an ad hoc subcommittee was named to study and recommend ways of exploring the relationship, if any, between the level of basic research in the United States and the potential effect of this level on the economy, including employment of chemists. Also discussed were such subjects as ways to work more closely with local sections in obtaining employment and salary data, and plans to obtain in greater detail salary and employment data in academia. Samuel M. Gerber, Chairman Technician Activities A definition for "chemical technician" previously approved by the committee will be presented to council for initial consideration at the 1979 spring national meeting. The committee also agreed to conduct a feasibility study on accreditation of two-year college chemical technology programs. Educational matters under consideration include: (1) production of a film on technician-chemist interactions; (2) revision of Modern Chemical Technology; and (3) continuing education programs. Charles McKibben, Chairman Women Chemists The Women Chemists Committee discussed the Garvan Medal, and with the board's approval suggested several companies to contact to sponsor the medal. The committee voted unanimously to recommend that the Professional Relations Committee include a statement in the Professional Employment Guidelines to encourage employers to consider maternity a short-term disability. A list of women chemists as potential speakers is to be developed. The possibility of sponsoring three symposia (1) Affirmative Action; (2) Effects of Chemicals on Women; and (3) History of Women in Chemistry was discussed. At the invitation of presidentelect Stacy, the committee was asked to consider ways the society can better serve the needs of women chemists. Also discussed was the possibility of a dues structure for husband/ wife members. A resolution concerning the Economic Boycott Campaign (ERA) was passed unanimously by the committee for council consideration. Nina Roscher, Chairman

Your views on matters reported by committees will be welcomed by the respective chairmen. Letters sent in care of R. N. Hader, 1155—16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036, will be forwarded promptly.

CAS offers two new information services Chemical Abstracts Service is offering two new computer-readable information files. One, CA Search, brings together in a single computer file the full identifying information and index entries for papers, patents, and other documents abstracted and indexed in Chemical Abstracts. The other, REG/CAN, links the unique registry numbers that identify chemical substances in CAS's computer-based Chemical Registry System with the CA abstract numbers for documents that contain information about the substances. CA Search combines the content of CAS's widely used CA Condensates computer-readable file, which contains complete bibliographic citations and keyword index terms for all documents abstracted in CA, with that of the newer CA Subject Index Alert file, which contains the more comprehensive and precise CA general subject and chemical substance index entries for the same documents. The merger of these two complementary files makes it possible to search both terminology used by authors, as reflected in the titles of documents and the keyword index entries that appear in the weekly issue indexes of CA, and the controlled indexing terminology used in the semiannual CA volume indexes. The CA Search file offers particular flexibility in the searching for information on chemical substances. Substance searches can be carried out using common or tradenames that may appear in document titles or keyword index entries, molecular formulas, or the highly precise CA index names and CAS registry numbers of the substances. The CA index names, which are constructed systematically from nomenclature terms that correspond to fragments of chemical structures, can be searched to identify substances that contain particular ring systems, functional groups, or other structural features of interest. The REG/CAN file is intended mainly to complement CA Condensates. It enables a searcher to retrieve the CA abstract numbers of documents that contain information on chemical substances identified by specific CAS registry numbers. The abstract numbers can be used to retrieve the titles, authors' names, and full bibliographic citations of the documents from the CA Condensates file or to locate the abstracts of the documents in CA. Both of the new files are issued weekly. REG/CAN files for prior years back to 1965, when the CAS Chemical Registry System began operating, also are available. Both files are offered for use under licensing agreements. For additional information about this service, contact the Marketing Department, Chemical Abstracts Service, P.O.
