It eliminates the necessity of clamping or weighting to prevent toppling. Since it can be left permanently connected to the vacuum line, it is in place and ready for use at all times. The only necessary connection remaining is to the filtering flask. The VAC-U-MAT consists of a flat circular rubber mat five inches in diameter and three-quarters of an inch thick, with a cylindrical hollow on the underside which serves as a vacuum chamber and which communicates with t h e upper surface through an orifice. Two brass tubulatures for s / i 6 " to 1/i" rubber tubing on the side of the VAC-U-MAT serve to connect the vacuum chamber with the vacuum line or aspirator pump and with the filtering flask. by a screw clamp, and vacuum is applied to secure the flask. When the Buechoer funnel or crucible is in place on the flask and t h e filtration is to be started the screw clamp is opened sufficiently to give the desired degree of evacuation within the flask. Thus t h e filter assembly is gripped securely throughout the operation without the use of bulky ringstands, clamps or weighting devices.
