Eastman Plasticizer 864 imparts outstanding polystyrene crazing resistance and extremely low odor carry-through
At Johnson Plastics Corp., large custom molder and extruder in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, operator heat seals a corner join on a PVC gasket to be used in Philco Corporation's new model refrigerator shown at top. Two organoleptic tests are used in Johnson's quality control. One involves heating the gasketing material, the other uses cold ageing with a small amount of butter. Both tests demonstrate very low odor carry-through of Plasticizer 864.
While migration of ordinary plasticizers from the vinyl gasket may cause crazing of the polystyrene door liner, Johnson found on examining many different classes of plasticizers that Plasticizer 864 offers excellent resistance to degradation of the polystyrene.
I n formulating polyvinyl chloride for use in refrigerator and home freezer gaskets, t h e plasticizer used must satisfy rigorous requirements. Resistance to polystyrene crazing and low odor carry-through are perhaps t h e two most important, and here E a s t m a n Plasticizer 864 is outstanding. Tests made on a parabolic mandrel show Plasticizer 864 to cause lowest styrene crazing of any of the well known polymeries, while subjective odor tests run a t both refrigerator and elevated temperatures show it to be the equal or superior of any of t h e commonly employed permanent types on t h e market today. Plasticizer 864 offers additional processing and end-use benefits as well: ribbon blending can be carried out a t lower temperatures, processing odor
is low (resembling honey), repelletizing and reextrusion of PVC containing Plasticizer 864 present no problems, and the surface of the profile extrusion possesses a highly desirable velvet finish.
