GAF PVP/Protectlve Colloids Check-List
GAF PVP is highly effective in suspension and emulsion polymerization... and as a poststabilizer in various emulsion systems. In suspension polymerization, PVP, PVP/ VA and other GAF-modified PVP-based protective colloids are used in producing resins for film, wire, cable and can coatings, floor tile, phonograph records, plastisol extender resin. By proper selection and formulation, they can give you beads of various size, clarity, porosity and bulk density. Also blotter-type resins and haze-free solutions of resins. In emulsion polymerization, GAF protective colloids provide improved freeze-thaw, mechanical and high-shear stability... borax and dextrin compatibility...viscosity control (500-5000 cps)...compatibility with other protective colloids...effectiveness at low concentrations (0.5-3.5%). This gives them wide applicability in producing emulsions for adhesives, coatings and paints.
GAF protective colloids also enhance water resistance and "scrubbability" of films. This is accomplished by regulating the ratio of protective colloid to surfactant during polymerization.
