Melvin P. Klein and Kenneth Sauer Introduction We are proud to present this special issue of The Journal of Physical Chemistry B in honor of Kenneth Sauer and Melvin Klein. These two outstanding scientists have been instrumental in guiding, advising, and mentoring a phenomenal number of students, postdocs, visitors, and collaborators who have passed through the Calvin Lab in Berkeley over a period that spans more than 30 years. A list of their names is given later in this introductory material. The papers in this special issue have been submitted by people who worked with the Sauer/Klein group at some point. The papers have all been peer reviewed in the normal way, handled by the Journal of Physical Chemistry editorial staff, whom we would like to thank for their efficient work.
Many of the papers in this issue were presented at a meeting held in Ken and Mel’s honor January 7-8, 1998, at UC Berkeley. The response both for the meeting and for this special issue from all the former and current members of the group was excellent. While most of these people worked on some aspect of photosynthesis while in Berkeley, it was impressive to see how many different areas of chemistry and biochemistry they have migrated into over the years and how successful they have become. We hope you enjoy these papers in tribute to two men who have enriched our lives so much.
