All-Plastic Valve for Corrosive Fluids
Vibration measuring instrument mounted on tripod
Instrument measures travel of relay
N e w Electronic Instrument Measures Vibration and Displacement
A valve constructed entirely of poly (vinyl chloride), except for seats and seals, will eliminate internal and external corrosion of metal valves. Features of this new valve are : positive shutoff after thousands of openings at full rated pressure or vacuum, replaceable valve seats and seals, and no plastic-to-plastic moving parts which m a y gall or seize. Currently, sizes ' / * to 2 inches in screwed ends are available with 3and 4-inch sizes available shortly. Dept. IEC, Jamesbury Corp., Worcester, Mass.
Welder for Plastics N o actual contact with the work Full scale range as high as 10 inches Controlling and measuring vibration and displacement is important with manufacturing equipment of all kinds. T o do the j o b , an optical device has been developed. It works on any material regardless of size, shape, or composition. No contact is m a d e with the work, making it possible for the device to be positioned some distance from the work. Basic principle of operation is the measurement of reflected light by a photocell. A special cathode ray tube beams an intense light spot onto the edge of the moving object. T h e reflected light is picked u p by
a photocell and transmitted to an oscilloscope or recorder through a servo amplifier. I n actual operation, the vertical deflection plates of the cathode ray tube are so positioned that when no light falls on the photocell, the imaged spot is driven down. Conversely, when light falls on the photocell, the spot is driven u p . It is this driving signal which is supplied to the oscilloscope. T h e device may be used to measure amplitude, frequency, and wave form of shake tables, vibration pickups, accelerometers, relay contacts, or to meas-

If you've ever tried to weld two pieces of thermoplastic resin together using a Bunsen burner, you know it's quite a j o b . Now a welding gun has been developed which simplifies the j o b . I n operation, the gun directs a stream of hot air on the material being welded and the welding rod so that they reach a plastic state simultaneously. Firm pressure on the welding rod will then thoroughly fuse the materials. Dept. IEC, Quelcor, Inc., Front & Broomall Sts., Chester, Pa.
Switch Has Radioactive Sensing Element This new switch uses radioactivity to measure liquid levels. Designed primarily for measuring fuel level in aircraft tanks, this switch will also find use in measuring liquid levels in storage tanks and for other plant applications. T h e sensing probe is only pencil-sized and has a hermetically sealed beta source a n d a beta detector which is mounted VOL. 49, NO. 4 ·
